Morley Stanwood Volleyball Prepares for District Tournament After Strong Regular Season

Morley Stanwood’s volleyball team, led by coach Robin Kozuch, is gearing up for the upcoming district tournament at Hesperia following the conclusion of their successful regular season.

In the regular season finale in Cadillac last Thursday, the Mohawks had a mixed set of results. They narrowly lost to Roscommon in a closely contested match with scores of 25-22, 26-24. However, they bounced back by defeating Grayling with scores of 25-23, 25-16 and splitting a tough match with Cadillac with scores of 25-27, 25-23.

Coach Kozuch reflected on the performance, saying, “We played really well against Cadillac and came close to victory. We fell just short. We beat Grayling but lost to Roscommon due to too many unforced errors. We need to work on minimizing those errors as we prepare for the district tournament next week.”

Key players in the Mohawks’ regular season performance included Brooke Moore with an impressive 39 digs and Alaina Christensen with 23. Lynsey Biller recorded 12 kills, while Makenna Martin and Christensen both had 10. Martin also contributed with eight blocks, and Piper Kozuch served seven aces. Sienna Ososki dished out 24 assists, while Piper Kozuch provided 13 assists.

The Mohawks, with a season record of 25-8-2, are set to compete in the Division 3 Hesperia district. Their first match is against Mason County Central at 7 p.m. on Monday. If they win, they will face White Cloud at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, with the championship match scheduled for November 2.

Coach Kozuch expressed confidence in her team, stating, “When this team is determined, they are a formidable force. They are gritty and highly aggressive, having invested countless hours in off-season training both on the court and in the weight room. One of our strengths this year is our well-rounded and experienced group of players. We don’t rely on a single standout. Our key to success is staying focused, not letting a few errors deter us, and keeping our eyes on the next ball.”

Kozuch acknowledged that their district competition would be tough, with White Cloud known for their scrappiness and Shelby boasting a talented player in Ohio State commit Neveah Gauthier. Despite the challenges, Kozuch remains optimistic, saying, “I believe we have what it takes to win.”
